If you have any doubt that Curl should be an alternative to Objective-C for e-textbooks, see these comments from the Apple web page for their iPad iBook Author tool.
Curl 8 is missing some features for technical books, but these would be so easily remedied.

In a related area (annotation) will Microsoft acquire Evernote ? See some current laptop Windows 7 Home configurations. Could Evernote displace Office OneNote ?
If Japan ever has something like a "Summer of Curl" program, I know what I would suggest as one project .... ( as in Google's "Summer of Code" and the European Smalltalk code gatherings.)
